Initiation is a term used for a point of achievement, not some kind of ritual conferring of status.

We are constantly undergoing initiations in everyday life as we master a new skill or deal successfully with a tricky situation.
Initiation marks a point of attainment and can only be self-achieved, as we have to have done the hard work to master the task in our everyday life.
It may be that the achievement is acknowledged outwardly by others, with some sort of celebration, but we have to have done the work, or it is an empty, hollow experience.
